According to the United Nations Development Programme, 400 million families (nearly 2 billion people) have no access to electricity. This means that they have no access to basic energy services, such as electric lighting, television, radio and stereo sets, refrigerators, etc. Solar Home Systems are the least cost method of household lighting and electricity. Families are spending up to N2, 900.00 per month on home energy services, depending primarily on income levels and fuel prices. A 1993 World Bank study from a dozen countries found that the average monthly expenditure for lighting and entertainment communications alone ranges between N250.00 for low income families to N1, 750.00 for upper income families in the rural areas. Find below examples of businesses that can be set up in rural areas using solar power: Small Barber shop - comprising of 2 barber's clippers and 1 lighting point - N35,000.00 ($270.00) Lights in a canteen - 3 light points for the evening/night - N40,000.00 ($310.00) (Note that the cost of the equipment, clippers, lights are not included above) The system size can be increased by increasing the size/number of the solar panels and battery bank.
