In 1992, the United Nations gathered leaders of the world together in Brazil for the Summit on the Environment. The Studies presented predicted that cooking fuel shortages were going to be one of the main problems facing our world in the next century. They estimated that 2.5 billion people will experience sever shortages by the year 2000. Also, nearly 50% of the rainforests being cut down are used just for cooking-fuel.

It is often people's concern for the environment that compels them to start using solar cookers.

  4. Burning fossil fuels releases a wide range of pollutants, adversely affecting the health of individuals. Solar cooking does not burn these fuels.
  5. The use of solar cookers reduces time and effort spent to find or buy fuel. This can measurably affect the quality of life.
  6. The cookers can purify biologically polluted water by pasteurization. Biologically polluted water causes many diseases and human misery, killing millions annually.

The Sahara desert continues to expand due to pressure on the plant life. There are areas in the Sahara desert where people can cook only a couple of hot meals a week due to lack of firewood. This is an area of abundant sunshine. Families are walking many kilometers everyday for wood; and in desperation the villagers cut living trees and bushes. These are the seeds for total environmental collapse.
